What this trip actually costs

Real cost categories, not a single made-up total — fuel spacing, brand-specific cards, and a realistic nightly range depending on season.

Fuel / 01

Stations are 50–80 km apart, sometimes 100

N1 and Orkan are the main operators — N1 stations often add food and grocery counters, Orkan is typically the cheaper self-service option. The longest documented gap on the Ring Road runs about 100 km, between Höfn and Djúpivogur. Fuel cards are brand-specific: an N1 card only works at N1 stations.

Food / 02

Grocery stops beat restaurant-every-meal

Larger N1 stations double as informal food stops, but a proper grocery run in Reykjavík or Akureyri for snacks and simple meals keeps costs down on the long, thin-service legs like the East Fjords or the interior stretch to Mývatn.

Lodging / 03

Roughly $100–$400 a night, season-dependent

Budget guesthouses run around $100/night off-peak; standard hotel doubles typically land between $160–$400 depending on location and season, with the South Coast and Jökulsárlón area commanding the highest peak-summer prices. Treat these as planning ranges, not fixed quotes — verify current rates when you actually book.
