Route km 546 Northeast
Dettifoss — East or West Bank, and Why It Matters
No bridge crosses the canyon here, so your choice of bank decides your road, your driving time, and the exact angle you get on one of Europe's most powerful waterfalls.

- Minimum stop
- 45–75 minutes
- West road (862)
- Paved, part-year service
- East road (864)
- Gravel, summer only
- No bridge
- Banks don't connect nearby
The decision / 01
West bank or east bank — pick before you commit
Because no bridge spans the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon near the falls, the west and east banks are reached by entirely separate roads, and switching sides means a long detour back around — decide before you turn off Route 1, not after. Road 862 on the west side is paved and gets some winter service (roughly closed only from January to early April); road 864 on the east side is gravel and generally only passable from late May through summer.
Most self-drive visitors use the west side
The paved, more consistently open 862 makes the west bank the practical default for anyone not visiting in the height of summer. The east side gives a different, arguably more dramatic angle, but only when the gravel road is actually open.
The falls / 02
Power over height
Dettifoss isn't Iceland's tallest waterfall, but it's regularly cited among Europe's most powerful by water volume — the ground genuinely trembles near the main viewpoint, and spray reaches well back from the edge in a moderate current. Paths from either car park lead to marked viewpoints; walking surfaces are uneven volcanic rock, wet and slippery near the rim, and there's no full barrier at the main overlook, so this isn't a stop for letting children run ahead.
Timing / 03
Fitting it into the Egilsstaðir–Mývatn leg
Dettifoss sits on the high interior plateau between Egilsstaðir and Mývatn, a genuinely remote stretch with long gaps between services. Fuel up before you leave Egilsstaðir, and treat the detour off Route 1 to the falls (roughly 45 minutes round trip on the west road, more on gravel) as time that eats directly into the rest of that day's driving.
